BEIJING, April 20, 2026 — The global hard paperboard and corrugated board production industry is witnessing a new wave of upgrading driven by intelligence, high efficiency, width expansion and green low-carbon transformation. From the commissioning of super-wide intelligent production lines in China to the transformation of European paper machines and the acceleration of high-end localization, the industry pattern is constantly optimizing, and technological innovations are emerging one after another, effectively supporting the development of packaging, logistics, printing and other downstream industries.
New Production Line Commissions Worldwide: Expanding Capacity and Upgrading Quality
In early 2026, China successfully tested the world’s first 3.6-meter ultra-wide intelligent automatic hardboard production line, marking a major breakthrough in the width and speed of global hard paperboard production equipment. With a cruising speed of 350m/min and a maximum speed of 400m/min, the production line is 30% faster than the industry average. Equipped with full servo drive, intelligent scheduling and waste heat recovery systems, it reduces energy consumption by 20% while realizing non-splicing production of ultra-large packaging for large household appliances and logistics pallets, greatly improving production efficiency and product quality.
Technological Breakthroughs: Leading the Industry Transformation with Intelligence and Green Development
The ultra-wide trend of hard paperboard production line has become increasingly prominent, with 3.15m-3.6m wide production lines gradually becoming the mainstream of high-end projects. In addition to the world’s first 3.6-meter production line, BHS 3.15-meter production lines were also put into operation . The wide-width design can reduce splicing times, improve raw material utilization and enhance the ability to undertake large orders, bringing significant economic benefits to enterprises.
Intelligent and unmanned technology has been widely applied in production lines. The latest production lines are equipped with auto-cruise systems, which can realize automatic deviation correction, speed regulation, tension control and glue amount precision control. At the same time, they have functions such as automatic base paper identification, parameter self-adaptation and unmanned stacking, greatly reducing manual intervention and improving production stability. Representative production lines include FOSBER 2.8m and Zhenyuan 2.5m intelligent corrugated board production lines put into operation in March 2026. FOSBER also launched the latest generation of SMART BELT belted single facer for 2.5m and 2.8m corrugated board production lines, helping enterprises produce high-quality cardboard regardless of paper weight and flute type.
The rapid roll change and order change technology has also made important progress. A automatic paper hardboard production line to Europe that can realize rapid roll change in 5-15 minutes, supporting flexible switching of multiple flute types such as A/B/C/E/F/N and 3/5 layers. With the combination of visual inspection and millisecond-level closed-loop control, it effectively meets the market demand for small-batch, multi-variety and high-frequency order delivery.
Green and low-carbon has become a core requirement of the industry. Hebei Province in China has imposed restrictions since 2024, prohibiting the approval of new cardboard projects without biomass energy. Sun Paper’s extra-hard cardboard has achieved a carbon emission of 0.72 tons of CO₂e per ton, which is better than the 2026 national standard. Through waste heat recovery and steam optimization, the steam consumption per ton of paper has been reduced from more than 250kg in the traditional process to 160-180kg. In addition, the new national standard to be implemented in June 2026 clearly requires that the recycled pulp content of express packaging should be no less than 80% and the water-based ink content should be no less than 90%, further promoting the green transformation of the industry.
Market Pattern and Future Trends: Concentration Improvement and Localization Acceleration
The order structure of the industry is constantly changing, from traditional large-batch orders to multi-variety, small-batch and high-frequency orders. This requires production lines to have higher flexibility, faster order change speed and lower loss rate. In the future, the hard paperboard production line will further integrate intelligence, greenization and flexibility, and the R&D and application of technologies such as AI scheduling, IoT prediction and full-life cycle energy management will become the key direction of industry development, helping the packaging industry achieve more sustainable and efficient development.
